George Whitaker passed sway on March 1, 2000 at the Veterans Hospital in Lexington after a long illness.
George was a proud veteran of World War II. During his distinguished service he served with the 345th
Ordance Depot Company. He was awarded the following medals: American Theater, Asiatic-Pacific W/1
Bronze Star, Philippine Liberation W/1 Bronze Star, Good Conduct and Victory Star.
George was the son of the late Johnny Whitaker and the late Louisa Cornett. He was the stepson of the
late Jont “Pa” Cornett. Also preceding him in death were three sisters; Ella Mae Mitchell, Ida Whitaker and
Nora Whitaker, and one brother; Filmore Cornett.
George is survived by his wife; Devenee Whitaker, three sons; Wayne, Waylan and Willie along with their
wives, Sue and Lisa, four grandchildren; Shonna Bolen, Madonna Whitaker, DeWayne Whitaker and Kevin
Whitaker. Since his passing he now has one great granddaughter, Autumn Bolen.
George was saved during the twelve hour. It is hard to walk to walk into the house and not see you sitting
in your chair. There is not a day that we do not think about you—always know that we love you.
