William Douglas Smith of Jeremiah, KY, passed away on Friday, June 8, 2001.  He was the son of the late
Dee and Ethel Smith.  Surviving are three sisters; Lilly Moss Hale of Jeremiah, Mary Jo Blair of Jeremiah, and
Anna Lou Blair of Lexington, two brothers; Roy Kenon Smith of Ohio and Tommy Harris Smith of Jeremiah.  He
was preceded in death by two brothers; James Richmond Smith, who died in a mining accident, and by John
Welch Smith, who had passed away on May 3, 2001.

William Douglas was born on November 11, 1930, being 70 years of age at the time of his passing.  He will
always live through the memory of his family, including his wife of 49 years, Martha Jane; his two sons, William
Douglas Smith Jr. and wife, Dina, of Barstow, California and Benjamin Dee Smith and wife, Danna, of Jeremiah,
two daughters; Cheryl Ann Banks and husband, Edward, of Letcher, and Pamela Jane Ison and husband, Kevin,
of Letcher.  Also surviving are nine grandchildren, Penny Smith, India Smith, Benjamin Smith, Elizabeth Smith,
Travis Smith, Dallas Banks, Desiree Banks, Jacqueline Banks and Kristin Ison, plus one great grandson, Hunter
Lee Douglas.  He was preceded in death by a daughter, Penny Carol, who died in a car accident on July 20,

William Douglas and Jane lived and raised their children in Michigan until 1975 when they decided to move
back to Jeremiah, near where William was raised.  Like his father before him, William Douglas enjoyed working
the land, be it bush hogging weeds, getting the ground ready to plant or discing up garden plots.  His father, Dee,
worked with a team of horses in his lifetime, but Wiliam Douglas enjoyed his red tractor and often could be seen
on it helping out neighbors and friends.  We are proud to have known such a good Christian man who had a great
love for his family, nation, community and most of all, a love for God.  He touched so many lives with his friendly,
loving manner and has been missed not only by his family but by all who knew and loved him.  William Douglas
was an Elder of the Doerman Memorial Presbyterian Church at Blackey, Ky.  He was a member of the
Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels and the Royal Arch Masons-Shores Chapter No. 69.  He served on the
board of directors of the Stuart Robinson’s alumni.  William was a veteran of the U.S. Army and received a
bronze star during the Korean War.  The Smith family has lost three precious members in the year 2001, Hassie
Smith, the widow of James Richmond, John Welch and William Douglas.

“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course,
I have kept the faith.  Henceforth there is laid up for me
A crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge,
Shall give at that day: and not to me only,
But unto all them also that love his appearing.”
