|PHYLLIS RAE AMBURGEY THORNSBERRY
It is with deep sadness that we write this obituary of Phyllis Rae Amburgey Thornsberry, a loving mother,
grandmother and friend.
Phyllis was born on March 23, 1939 to the late Arvel and Corsie Tolliver Amburgey. She had four sisters,
Evelyn Amburgey Taylor, Armenda Ritchie, Judy Clark, and Jenny Edwards. She also had one brother, Donald
When Phyllis was 19 she married her loving companion, the late Rex Thornsberry. They had three children
who adored her: Ollie Jeffrey Thornsbery (Janice), Evelyn Thornsberry Scarberry (Albert Leon) and Brian
Phyllis was a terrific grandmother to her nine grandchildren, Jessica Thornsberry Green (Nick), Derek
Thornsberry, Eddie Burden, Zackery Thornsberry, Devan Thornsberry, Brittany Scarberry, Justin Scarberry,
Tyler Thornsberry, and Lindsey Thornsberry.
On the second Sunday on May of 1977, Phyllis stepped out in faith and joined the Little Dove Church at
Sassafras. She would let her light shine to everyone she met. She loved the Lord and was proud to serve Him.
She longed to join the Lord someday in Heaven.
Phyllis was a bus driver for the Knott County School Board for 25 years. She loved this job and “her kids” as
she often called them, and they loved her. She was only four days away from retiring when she was called to
join the Lord on December 13, 2002.
Phyllis will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. She was such a wonderful person and our lives
will never be the same without her, but we all hope to meet with her again someday in Heaven.
